The Milan Metro Line 4 is an underground rapid transit line under construction in Milan provided with a driverless light urban railway system on fully automated track and with permanently staffed stations. Blue will be the identifying color of the new line.

Line M4 will cross Milan west to east for about 15 km (9.4 miles) of two single tunnels and will comprises 21 stations. Line 4 will feature interchanges with the other rail lines as well as with surface tramlines, trolleybus lines, bus routes at stations and with the Airport of Milano Linate.

The highly urbanized context, which characterizes Milan, requires the use of EPB-TBM (Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine) for the boring of the tunnels to minimize the effects of the excavations on the surrounding buildings and a significant presence of groundwater. In facts, one of the main focus of the project is the evaluation of the interference between tunnels excavation and existing buildings, considering that many of them are of historical value.
